Good Morning, Monster

A true masterpiece written by Catherine Gildiner

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Here’s the deal! I am recommending this book even though I know you may hate me. Heck…I called the friend that recommended it and told her that I’m mad at her for recommending it.

Why?

Because I started bawling my eyes out within the first 30 pages. That’s never happened to me! Not gonna lie… I’ve cried reading books. But it’s never happened within the first 30 pages. That was my first clue into how good this book is going to be… Boy, was I clueless!

In this book,  Catherine Gildiner managed to bring her and her client’s stories to life and paint them in the most beautiful colors, within the black and white pages of her book. She brought us five emotional stories of trauma, hardships, success and thriving against all odds, but she did it vin a way that helped us empathize with them, root for them and delight in seeing how therapy has helped theme turn their lives around.

I’ve started the book by crying for Laura and the huge responsibility she took on at a very early age, continued wishing Peter had someone to talk to so he wouldn’t feel so alone, then saw how Danny’s love for his culture survived a system that was set on destroying it and got to witness Alana’s strength and wit win despite all her father’s attempts to destroy her spirit. Last, but not least, Catherine showed us that trauma does not keep count of social status with Madeline’s story and how she created her dream life despite being torn down in every possible way by the person that should have been building her up.

This book has changed me in ways I could never explain, helped me understand how deeply trauma can affect someone’s life (yes, even my own) and had made me feel less alone about my own trauma.

There are three things I took to heart after reading this book, and you should too:

#1 You are stronger than you think

#2 It’s not your fault that they didn’t love you

#3 It’s not your responsibility to fix others, but it is your responsibility to be happy
